A notary is a person of proven integrity appointed by the state to serve the public as an impartial witness. A notary is considered a public official and must follow specific rules set up by the state.

WHAT FORM OF IDENTIFICATION DO I NEED?
Each signer must present at least one of the forms of ID listed below. The ID must be current or, if expired, must have been issued within the last 5 years. The ID must contain the signer’s photograph, physical description, signature and have a serial or other identifying number.
- Driver’s license or non-driver’s ID issued by a US state
- US passport
- US military ID that contains the information mentioned above (The Common Access Card (CAC) is not acceptable)
- Driver’s license issued in Mexico or Canada
- Foreign passport stamped by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
A notary cannot advise you which type of notarization you need. Consult with an attorney, or the entity requiring you have the document notarized, prior to the appointment.
